Usually nerds and jocks rarely mix very well but there is a special event that while geeks could most of the time care less about a sporting event, the Super Bowl changes that every year. Hollywood rolls out flashy new trailers for upcoming films and commercials use nostalgia and pop culture to sell their products.

This year we were treated to some really good sneak peeks of some of the films that everyone is looking forward to. Here are the more gene specific trailers that premiered during the Super Bowl.

Tomorrowland (Disney May 22nd)

Jurassic World (Universal June 12th)

Kingsman: The Secret Service (FOX February 13th)

Insurgent (Summet March 20th)

Furious 7 (Universal April 3rd)

Terminator: Genisys (Paramount July 1st)

Minions (Universal July 10th)

Spongebob Sqarepants Movie: Sponge Out of Water (Nickelodeon February 6th)

Seventh Son (Legendary February 6th)

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 (MGM February 20th)

Ted 2 (Universal June 26th)

There were a lot of regular commercials that uses familiar genre or pop culture references to get viewers to notice their ads.

Kia hired Pierce Brosnan to do a James Bond themed ad

Esurance got Bryan Cranston playing on Walter White from Braking Bad and the Say My Name from the show.

I will leave you with one of my favorite ones from last year that literally exploded with nostalgia. It was from of all places Radio Shack with their In With The New campaign that was a blast from the 1980’s. The thing to take away from these ads are that a great ad can’t save a crappy store or brand. People loved the Radio Shack ads but still didn’t go to the stores.

There was the main commercial

They followed it up with a series of character commercials. The first was Alf

Jason from Friday The 13th

Hulk Hogan and Sgt. Slaughter

There was a Cliff Clavin ad that was also done but I was unable to find it because Radio Shack has sadly pulled all of the vides for the campaign.
