Carmine Infantino 1925 – 2013

carmine dc special

It has been a really tough day for me. Three legends have passed away today. Sadly the comics world lost a true legend today. Carmine Infantino passed away today at the age of 87. Best known for redesigning the Flash for the silver age when he introduced the red suite version known today. He also had a huge hand in developing the modern Batman in 1964 with John Broome. He is also known for his work on Adam Strange in Mystery in Space. He created a number of well-known Flash villains along the way including Captain Cold, Gorilla Grodd, Mirror Master, and Captain Boomerang. Two of his biggest creations were Batgirl with Gardner Fox and Deadman with Arnold Drake. In the 1960’s he took the position of Editorial DIrector at DC Comics. He hired Dick Giordano and promoted Joe Orlando and Joe Kubert to editors. During his tenure he got Neal Adams and Denny O’Neil to join DC. He even managed to lure Jack “The King” Kirby away from Marvel Comics. Before he stepped down as editorial director in 1975 he created the Human Target and helped coordinate the first ever team up of Superman vs. Spider-Man. After he left DC he went to Marvel Comics and illustrated Star Wars, Spider-Woman and Nova. He retired regular comics work in the 1990’s but still made convention appearances up until as recent as last year at the Florida Supercon.

Carmine left us a legacy that will last for generations to come. The best thing about the arts is that generations to come will be able to see and fall in love with his art just as we did. What better way to remember his legacy than with his art. They say a picture can say a thousand words. Carmine’s art below leaves me speechless.
