It’s been a while for a new Tales From The Shelf post and I hope to get some more up soon.

Kids are Weird by Jeffery Brown who is best known for his Darth Vader and Son and Vader’s Little Daughter books takes a look at what it’s like observing kids as a parent. I myself do not have children I am Uncle Steven to a lot of kids of friends. Trust me I can relate to this book quite well. The thing that I really enjoyed about the book is that it’s very relatable because we all know that kids say the first thing that come to their minds and you never know what you are going to get from them.

The book is 108 pages of Brown’s autobiographical stories from his son Oscar and the crazy things that he says. The synopsis from Chronicle Books is, As he’s shown in his previous hugely popular books, Jeffrey Brown has a real gift for finding humor in quirky yet universal truths. Now the bestselling author of Darth Vader and Son and Vader’s Little Princess brings his witty comic observations to terrestrial parenting in this perceptive book celebrating the more surreal moments of raising a child. In charming colorful panels, Brown wryly illustrates his five-year old son’s take on the world around him, from watching TV (“Elton John looks pretty in that shirt”) to playing with toys (“This truck can survive on very little water”) to odd requests (“Don’t feel happy at me”), capturing the sweetly weird times that mothers and fathers everywhere experience with their own curious, pure-minded kids.

While the book is a really short read it is very satisfying. If you are familiar with Brown’s other books then you already know what to expect from him. For new comers you are in for a real treat with this book. While his Star Wars books are really fun there is something about his more personal work that I really like. The structure of the book is like a daily strip and he really captures the innocence of what children say and do. While the stories are both touching and funny it’s Brown’s artwork that really makes the book shine. On the surface his art style is pretty simplistic but it’s the subtle details that you really notice when you go back and re-read the book again. Even if you don’t have kids I think that the book is still a great read because the wonderful way that Brown captures that childhood innocence that anyone can relate to.
